How to pair Pastéis de Nata with iced drinks

Tips

If you already know and love the Pastel de Nata, you know how it's a perfect match for a hot cup of coffee or tea. But what about when the temperature rises and we fancy something chilled? The beauty of the nata is its versatility, making it just as delicious when paired with an iced drink. It's all about finding that perfect balance to complement its rich, creamy wholesomeness.

Iced Coffee Classics

A classic for a reason, just with a cool twist. Just as a bica (espresso) is a traditional companion, an iced version works brilliantly. A straightforward Iced Americano or a creamier Iced Latte - we call it Galão - can cut through the richness with its subtle bitterness while still allowing you to enjoy that shot of caffeine.

Refreshing & Zesty Options

Sometimes, we want something to lighten things up. A good, old fashioned lemonade does the job perfectly. Its sharp citrus notes offer a refreshing contrast to the nata's creamy sweetness. Similarly, iced tea can be a great, less sugary alternative. A classic English breakfast iced tea (just brew strong, chill, and serve over ice) provides that familiar flavour without the heat. Or, if you fancy something a bit different, a Iced Chai Latte: The warming spices often found in chai (like cinnamon and cardamom) can offer an interesting counterpoint to the nata's sweetness when served chilled.

Less Common Pairings

As a dessert, Pastel de Nata goes well with several of the fortified wines that Portugal produces, such as Moscatel de Setúbal, Madeira and Port. But table wines also pair nicely. The crisp acidity of a Portuguese vinho verde served ice-cold balances the sweetness beautifully whilst channelling proper Portuguese vibes. A rosé with a light, fruity profile and residual sugar is another option.

If you're partial to a cocktail, a chilled gin and tonic enhances the flavour of custard tarts in several delicious ways. The crisp, cold nature of a G&T cuts through the rich, creamy texture of the custard. Or, to keep up with the theme, upgrade to a White Port & Tonic

Sometimes less really is more. Even sparkling water with a twist of lime works brilliantly. It acts as a palate cleanser, letting the nata be the star. So next time the sun’s out, skip the hot coffee and treat yourself to a chilled drink with your Pastel de Nata. It’s the ultimate summer upgrade.
